James was a farmer in Stark County, Ohio, before moving to Michigan in 1861 where he became a fruit farmer. He was a Whig before he became a Republican. James died from consumption the 29th of May, 1886, in Ganges Township, Allegan County, Michigan. He was married the 17th of September, 1829, by Levi Burden, J.P., in Stark County, Ohio, to: Matilda A Jones, who was born the 16th of June, 1804, in Virginia, the daughter of Jordan Jones. After her mother died while she was an infant, Matilda was reared by an aunt. James and Matilda had only $10.00 and Matilda's dowry of bedding and clothing when they were married. Their first home was a brush wigwam. Later James's father, Stephen, helped build a cabin in the woods for the couple. Matilda died the 1st of May, 1890, and was buried beside her husband in McDowell Cemetery, Casco Township, Allegan County, Michigan.
